About Kingston

The electorate of Kingston covers 377 square kilometres of the southern suburbs of Adelaide, stretching from Hallett Cove and Happy Valley in the north, to Sellicks Beach and Willunga in the south.

It is named after Charles Kingston, a former Premier of South Australia. Kingston was a father of federation and his government introduced a wide range of reforms, including laws which made South Australia the first place in the British Empire where women could become Members of Parliament.

Kingston is a large and diverse area which includes some of the best places in the world to live and work. The South is defined by its beautiful beaches which make up the western boundary of the electorate, the award winning McLaren Vale wineries and growing suburbs with many new families in their first home. Large industries in the electorate include wineries, retail and manufacturing.

Major issues in the electorate include housing affordability, broadband infrastructure, workplace rights, water security and the provision of GP services.

The 2010 Federal Election saw a swing of 9.49 percent in favour of Amanda Rishworth MP as the Labor Member of Parliament and candidate for Kingston. For further information about the results of the 2010 Federal Election, see www.aec.gov.au.
