Fighting For Us

Amanda is Fighting for the South in Canberra

Since being elected in 2007, Amanda has been working hard to represent Southern Adelaide in Parliament.

Amanda has regularly spoken in Parliament to recognise, thank, and acknowledge the important contributions of Southern Adelaide community groups, individuals and businesses.

Amanda uses her time in Parliament to raise issues which are most important to local residents, families and businesses in Adelaide’s Southern Suburbs - such as the Turnbull Government's cuts to education and how they will impact local schools in the South, urging the Government to properly fund Medicare and ensure every Australian can access affordable healthcare, and protecting the Murray-Darling Basin and the Murray-Darling Basin Plan.

Amanda has introduced a number of Private Members’ Motions into the Federal Parliament on topics such as protecting the Murray-Darling Basin Plan, the importance of supporting young people to transition from school into work or further training, the sexualisation of children, and the need for accurate food labelling. These Private Members’ Motions can be accessed at  Amanda’s Speeches.

Amanda was proud to speak in support of the Australia’s first national Paid Parental Leave scheme introduced by the former Federal Labor Government. Amanda listened as local parents explained just how difficult it can be to balance work and family commitments.

Amanda recognised the importance of assisting parents to stay at home with their newborn child during those critical first few months and welcomed the opportunity to stand up and support the scheme.

This historic legislation is now helping employers to attract and retain skilled staff, allowing more women of child bearing age to stay connected with the workforce and, importantly, it is now giving more babies the best start in life.

One issue that is constantly raised with Amanda is access to fast, high-quality broadband in the South. Amanda understands local businesses and families rely on fast and affordable broadband services.

People and businesses in the South regularly contact Amanda to express their frustration with the Abbott-Turnbull Government's fibre-to-the-node NBN - either because they are still unconnected, or they have been connected to the Liberal Government's fibre-to-the-node NBN and are now receiving a poor and unreliable connection.

Amanda believes every Australian deserves access to fast, reliable, globally competitive broadband that Labor's fibre-to-the-home NBN provides, and Amanda has continued to raise this in the Parliament. Amanda's latest parliamentary speech on the National Broadband Network can be found here http://www.rishworth.com.au/news/speeches-in-parliament/768-speech-national-broadband-network.html.

Amanda is working hard to support Southern Adelaide and will continue to be a voice in Canberra for families, individuals, and businesses in the South.
